During Haith's vibrant planting initiative to hand back commercial space at the new Haith’s Bird Food Centre in Louth, Lincolnshire, a special opportunity emerged to honour the legacy of budgie breeders. As we approached the planting of three eucalyptus trees, we invited Chris Snell, a champion budgie breeder and supporter of Haith’s since 1965, to plant the first tree in memory of breeders of the past.
Since 1937, Haith’s has provided bird keepers with SuperClean seed mixes to promote health and vitality. This deep-rooted history inspired us to celebrate the breeders who have used our products over the generations. Given the natural link between eucalyptus trees and budgerigars in their native Australia, it was the perfect opportunity for a meaningful celebration.
Chris Snell, joined by business owner David Haith, directors Rachael Haith and Simon King, and horticultural consultant Martin Woods (previously Head Gardener at Sandringham), participated in this special moment. Chris smiled brightly as he planted the tree. Simon King asked Chris how it felt to plant something representing birdkeepers and breeders who have been part of Haith’s journey since 1937. Chris reflected on his many years with Haith’s, sharing how honoured he felt to be chosen for this significant event.

Afterwards, Julianne Jessett, Customer Service Champion at Haith’s, asked some questions provided by the Haith’s Team.
Through the Q&A, Chris, also known as ‘The Light Green Man’, highlighted the benefits of eucalyptus for budgies, “It’s wonderful. In Australia, where the birds come from, that’s where they nest. Also, if you put branches in your aviary, they’re good for the birds. Red mites die because of the oil given off by the eucalyptus trees.” He recommended for budgie breeders to keep a eucalyptus tree in their gardens, and to give it to them just before the breeding season as it brings their feathers into condition.

Next, Martin Woods was asked how it felt to be a part of a project to give commercial space back to nature. He stated, “It’s been a real pleasure to be a part of it. The whole ethos to have a sanctuary within an industrial area is quite a different project for me, but really exciting.” Martin also discussed sustainable gardening linking to the planting scheme, “I like to keep in mind being sustainable, having something that will continue to flourish into the future. I’m looking ahead 50 years sometimes! Hopefully, this (the Haith’s grounds) will be flourishing.”
"At Haith's, we are dedicated to giving back to nature by converting some of our commercial spaces into flourishing sanctuaries. Planting these eucalyptus trees is not only a tribute to the legacy of budgie breeders but also a step towards restoring natural habitats. Each tree we plant represents our commitment to preserving wildlife and fostering a sustainable environment for future generations." - Simon King
It was a meaningful moment for Haith’s as a company, and as the eucalyptus tree grows from year to year, we can be reminded of budgie breeders of the past and how we are succeeding in our project of giving back to nature.
