Collection: Lovebird Essentials
Lovebirds are best kept by themselves in small aviaries to prevent bickering, which quite often occurs when kept in colonies, especially during the breeding season. They are quite hardy and can be kept in outside aviaries throughout the winter in more temperate conditions providing a dry frost-proof shelter is provided.
Lovebirds require a staple bird diet based on plain canary seeds, millets and small quantities of sunflower and hempseed. Haith's Lovebird Mix has been developed around this formula but also includes additions of Safflower and maize to provide a unique well-balanced diet. Some enjoy fresh greenfood and many relish a slice of apple. Millet Sprays, when suspended from the roof of the aviary will provide hours of interest and foraging activity and when soaked they provide a very useful rearing food. An occasional supplement of Haith's Parrot-Like Tonic Seed can also be beneficial, providing vitamins and minerals, which may be lacking in other mixes.
In a breeding situation, small quantities of Haith's Condition and Rearing Food can be offered but it is not always taken, the birds prefer a little soaked seed or soaked Millet Spray if it is available. Egg Biscuit Food or Nectarblend along with Prosecto Insectivorous Mix may also be tried but some Lovebirds will turn it down. Always offer Fine Oystershell Grit, Granulated Charcoal to aid the digestive process and Small Cuttlefish Bone to supply essential calcium. Other minerals may be made available from Haith's Mineralised Tonic Grit.
