The Macaws are the largest member of the parrot family and all have massive, powerful bills which indicates that they should be housed in a strong steel-meshed enclosure, preferably an aviary but at the very least, a large purpose-built parrot cage.

They have been very popular pets for generations and now many are threatened in the wild, some to the extent of near extinction. This can be only partly blamed on the pet trade as environmental changes and habitat erosion for man's activities appear to be the main cause of their demise. It is made up from just 25% of the very best large USA sunflower seed; the remainder being 16 other premium quality ingredients, including a variety of dried fruits, large nuts and even diced carrot. It is a remarkable mix providing a much healthier alternative to the enormous quantity of sunflowers contained in many mixes that are frequently deficient in various amino-acids and calcium.

It cannot be denied that some species and individuals have highly selective feeding habits and have a tendency to take what they fancy, frequently rejecting beneficial items. It can therefore be advantageous to offer a basic parrot mix such as Haith's Parrot Food that provides a good balanced diet and supplementing it with other items like Parrot Nature Diet and Parrot Fruit and Nut to give greater variety. An occasional supplement of Haith's Parrot-Like Tonic Seed can also be beneficial, providing vitamins and minerals, which may be lacking in other mixes.

Fresh food items such as corn-on-the-cob, fruit, and vegetables such as peas-in-the-pod are valuable extras but cut them into manageable pieces that can be held in the claw to eat.
