They are slightly smaller than a Starling and in flight; they look very similar with their short, triangular wings. They are very sociable birds and while feeding them are highly cooperative, and their song is a high-pitched trilling "sirrrr".

This exotic looking bird is a winter visitor from Scandinavia and does not breed in the UK. They migrate to Britain October-March and they arrive on the coasts and move inland in search of food. They can often be seen in retail parks because many car parks are now bordered with rowan or hawthorn bushes and there are plenty of people to notice these approachable birds.

Waxwings feed mostly on fruit, but when the fruit is not available at certain times of the year they feed on buds, flowers and insects and they catch insects through foliage or even in mid-air. In many urban gardens, they will find rowan and hawthorn berries to eat and by hanging apples from a branch in your garden you may entice them to.
